Ripple and Stellar: ECB’s 2018 Financial View

  • Ripple was classified around enterprise payment settlement, while Stellar was associated with digital IOUs in the ECB-hosted presentation.
  • The 2018 table separated financial roles across leading cryptocurrencies, placing settlement and digital value among distinct blockchain applications.
  • Years later, payment settlement and digital asset issuance remain central use cases across both Ripple and Stellar ecosystems.

Ripple and Stellar featured in an ECB-hosted 2018 cryptocurrency discussion, where distinct financial roles placed both networks within emerging digital payment infrastructure.

Ripple Emerged With a Settlement-Focused Role

The historical classification within the ECB-hosted material described Ripple as an enterprise payment settlement network. It also noted Stellar’s separate classification around digital IOUs.

The table ranks Ripple third among the listed cryptocurrency projects. Bitcoin occupies first place as digital gold, while Ethereum represents programmable contracts and money. Ripple instead receives a value proposition centered on enterprise payment settlement.

That classification gives Ripple a distinct position within the historical framework. It was not presented as another general-purpose cryptocurrency competing through monetary characteristics. Instead, the description tied its role directly to financial settlement infrastructure.

The distinction matters because settlement requires specialized infrastructure and institutional connectivity. Enterprise payment systems must address transfers, liquidity, counterparties and transaction processing. The table therefore associates Ripple with a clearly defined financial function.

Stellar Represents Digital Financial Value

Stellar appears seventh in the table, with digital IOUs listed as its value proposition. That description differs from Ripple’s settlement-focused classification. Instead, it points toward digitally represented claims or financial obligations.

The table places Stellar alongside projects pursuing specialized financial applications. IOTA is linked with Internet-of-things payments, while Monero represents private digital cash. Cardano combines layered currency and contracts within another category.

These classifications show how cryptocurrency research separated networks according to intended functions. The projects were not treated as interchangeable systems serving identical financial purposes. Each received a specific description reflecting its perceived use case.

The digital IOU classification also provides context for tokenized financial value. Digitally represented claims can support transfers, ownership records and financial instruments. That concept fits within the wider development of blockchain-based financial infrastructure.

Financial Applications Continue Evolving

The ECB-hosted presentation does not establish institutional endorsement of either network. It also does not show central-bank adoption of XRP or XLM for settlement. Instead, it records how both projects were characterized during a 2018 discussion.

Ripple’s settlement description remains connected with its broader payment infrastructure narrative. Its ecosystem continues emphasizing cross-border payments and financial settlement. Stellar likewise continues developing applications involving payments and tokenized assets.

The chart’s value therefore rests on historical continuity rather than prediction. A classification from 2018 cannot determine how financial networks develop years later. It can, however, document how their intended roles were understood then.

The comparison also shows how institutional discussions separated cryptocurrency specialization. Bitcoin was digital scarcity, Ethereum was programmable finance, and Ripple was enterprise settlement. Stellar occupied another financial niche through its digital IOU classification.

That framework helps explain why payment-focused blockchain narratives remain distinct today. Settlement networks address movement between financial systems, while tokenized assets represent value digitally. Both functions can coexist within the broader development of blockchain-based markets.

AI Stocks Struggle to Rebound: Lacking Three Major Supports, July’s Rally Hard to Replicate

JPMorgan pointed out that due to the absence of ETF bargain-hunting funds, limited room for short covering, and the early termination of the $40 billion buyback by Samsung and SK Hynix, the rebound strength of AI stocks in October may not match that of July.
