Pi Just Shipped Protocol 27 With KYC Fix: Is $1 a Stretch?

Pi Network’s (PI) core team members have been hammering away on the Protocol 27 upgrade, completing the needed testnet steps this week. The final test was carrying out 250 transfers on a single block with no critical issues. Now, the next step is deploying that new configuration on Pi Network’s mainnet.

Pi Network Just Proved It Can Handle Ultra-High Traffic

Earlier, the Stellar-inspired Protocol 26 was meant to enhance Pi Network’s (PI) decentralized application (dApp) environment with extended support of advanced-level applications. Now, the Protocol 27 is adding another layer to that mechanism with the freshly-tested cutting-edge smart-contract authentication.

Many strong voices in the community are asking whether this will affect Pi Coin’s price in any meaningful way. With Pi Network’s mainnet enhancements being rolled out in a careful and gradual manner, a returning demand for DeFi activities shall follow.

The network’s dApp range is growing beyond casual games & tipping services, but the main issue is still centered around migration. Since the mainnet saw the light of day last year in March, many Pioneers have reported issues when going through the KYC process. This week, Pi’s core team cleared a logjam for roughly 417,000 Pioneers.

Core Team Clears Way For a Crowd Of Stuck Pioneers

Now, another fast-track lane has been opened for a smoother migration process. The transition is still a work in progress: the core team issued a statement saying there’s an upcoming fix for another 497,000 community members, who had stumbled upon the technical issue of absent Pi Coins to cover their gas fees in relation to the migration process.

The repetitive liveness checks present another challenge that Pi Network’s development team is currently facing.

According to the latest Pi news, the team’s trying to sort that out by testing the palm-print scans, while older Android smartphones are now covered for wider liveness check support. With these setbacks erased, Pioneers can expect a smoother transition.

For that to properly reflect on the price of Pi Coin (PI), the demand has to match these freshly implemented DeFi capabilities. Trading just above $0.09, Pi Coin’s daily trading volume is still capped in the tens of millions.

That’s a far cry from the competing alts of a similar cap, such as Algorand (ALGO) or Polygon (ex.MATIC), constantly garnering between $50 million to $100 million on a daily basis.

While Pi Network’s (PI) main token hasn’t retouched the $1 price since mid-May 2025, the threshold is realistic once more Pioneers migrate to the mainnet and are able to use their unlocked coins in the growing variety of DeFi services arriving on Pi. For now, the little speculative interest and migration issues keep the mobile mining altcoin from hitting $1.

1. Technology stocks fell sharply as investor interest shifted toward energy and selected defensive assets. From October 10 to 16, the Nasdaq 100 declined 5.49% and the S&P 500 fell 1.95%, while the Dow gained 0.67% and WTI crude rose 10.41%. BTC, ETH, and SOL declined 1.27%, 2.65%, and 4.44%, respectively. This week's technology earnings will be an important test of whether revenue growth, margins, and cash flow can justify current valuations. Better-than-expected results could help stabilize markets in the near term. 2. Crypto continues to see pockets of strong activity, but a broad-based altcoin season has yet to materialize. CoinMarketCap's (CMC) Altcoin Season Index stood at 54 as of the October 18 UTC daily observation, below the altcoin-season threshold of 75, while BTC dominance rose to 60.08%. Our proxy leverage ratio fluctuated between 4.00 and 4.07 during the week, showing no sustained increase and suggesting limited appetite for additional leverage. Meanwhile, as major exchanges expand access to traditional financial assets, the recent sell-off in AI-related equities could attract short-term speculative capital away from crypto. Such capital rotation could make it more difficult for a new altcoin season to take hold. 3. Papertrade's loss-to-mine model has generated significant interest across the crypto community. The protocol combines high-leverage derivatives trading with zero slippage and a mechanism that rewards trading losses with PAPER tokens. Across the eight complete UTC days from October 10 to 17, cumulative reported revenue reached approximately $56.08 million, including $51.90 million distributed to token holders. With growing participation from key opinion leaders (KOLs), Papertrade has reportedly ranked among the top three platforms by profitability in the broader market recently. Assets to watch: BTC, ETH, SOL, ARB, OP, SKHYNIX, SKHY, META, TSLA, LRCX, and SPCX. Key research priorities this week: Cash flow performance in technology earnings; the relative discount and holding costs of the two SK Hynix contracts; and U.S. initial jobless claims and PMI data. Weekly market data cover the period through October 16, while research information was verified through October 18. Observation periods are specified separately for each chart.
