One Inflation Report Could Send Altcoins Flying or Crashing: 5 Cryptos Worth Risking Before the Fed’s Next Move

  • The September CPI report on Wednesday is the final inflation reading before the Fed’s October 28 decision.
  • CME FedWatch showed about a 19% chance of an October hike as of October 9.
  • Each of the five tokens has a different use case and trading profile, so reactions to the data may vary.

A heavy week of economic data is being watched by crypto and stock traders. The September Consumer Price Index (CPI) report is due Wednesday, and it is the last inflation reading before the Federal Reserve’s October 28 meeting. Because rate expectations often move riskier assets, altcoins such as SOL, XRP, HYPE, ZEC and SUI are being tracked closely.

The Fed raised interest rates in September, the first increase since 2023. A second hike within two months is now being weighed by some market participants. Higher-than-expected inflation is usually read as a sign that tight policy may continue, while softer figures are taken to mean that further increases may not be needed.

As of October 9, traders priced about a 19% chance of an October hike, according to CME FedWatch. That level suggests most participants expect rates to be held steady. Still, such odds can change within hours if the CPI numbers differ from forecasts. Trading may be thinner early in the week because of the bond market holiday, and thin liquidity can exaggerate price moves.

Solana (SOL): Speculative Activity Meets Rate Risk

Solana is a layer-1 blockchain that launched in 2020. It hosts decentralized finance apps, payment tools and many meme tokens. Since much of its activity is tied to speculative trading, SOL has historically been sensitive to shifts in risk appetite. A hotter CPI reading could weigh on that activity, while a softer one could ease the pressure.

XRP(XRP): Macro Data Over Legal Headlines

XRP is the native token of the XRP Ledger, a network closely linked to Ripple. Its main stated use is moving value across borders. Its long legal history in the United States has often shaped its price, but this week the focus is on macroeconomic data, and XRP is expected to follow the wider market’s reaction.

Hyperliquid (HYPE): Volatility and Leverage

Hyperliquid is a DEX focused on perpetual futures, the exchange’s token is called HYPE. It entered the market in the end of 2024 with its token. The platform is built on the use of leverage, which means that following significant data releases, there are likely to be significant volumes and forced liquidations.

Zcash (ZEC): A Smaller, Specialized Asset

Zcash was launched in 2016 and is based on the original code of Bitcoin. It provides “shielded” transactions, which ensure that the amount, sender and receiver remain hidden, through the use of zero-knowledge proof. There are only 21 million coins that are available for sale. As a more specialized asset, its trading can be thinner, which may lead to larger percentage moves around news events.

Sui (SUI): A Newer Network in a Crowded Field

Sui is a layer-1 blockchain whose main network launched in 2023. It was developed by Mysten Labs and uses the Move programming language. Competing with Solana and others, its token has often traded in line with the broader altcoin market.

Why Reactions May Differ

All five tokens face the same report, yet their responses may not match. Leverage-heavy assets such as HYPE may swing faster, while thinly traded ones such as ZEC may move on lower volume. Attention is expected to stay on the CPI release Wednesday and on Warsh’s remarks late Thursday. No outcome is guaranteed, and the October 28 decision remains the next major checkpoint.

Just bet on AI and already faced a market blow! Berkshire reports earnings tonight, Abel faces a major test in his transformation

Greg Abel has been leading Berkshire Hathaway for less than a year, yet he has already made a bet of over $10.9 billion on the AI sector, marking a complete break from Buffett’s traditional avoidance of tech stocks. However, Alphabet’s stock price has fallen below their initial purchase cost, and Bending Spoons continues to decline, putting this bold AI gamble to the test. At the same time, third-quarter earnings per share are expected to drop 6% year-over-year, and the share repurchase program is likely to plummet from $4.5 billion to $1.6 billion. How to deploy $358 billion in cash will be a major challenge for the new leader’s capital allocation skills.

Has the AI bubble burst? Goldman Sachs: It's more like 1998 than 2000 right now

The Goldman Sachs trading desk stated that the current wave of sell-offs resembles the 1998 liquidity crisis more than the bursting of the 2000 bubble. It is a forced deleveraging rather than a refutation of business fundamentals. The market is drastically repricing construction financing and timeline expectations, rather than underlying demand. Moreover, the issues currently drawing the most attention from the market—electricity and licensing—are actually the least important, as limited supply does not equate to disappearing demand. The real question that needs to be answered is whether long-term revenues can ultimately justify the capital invested.
