Google Slides After Earnings: Why Cloud Growth Failed to Impress Wall Street

Earnings Miss Triggers a Sharp Selloff Despite Strong Revenue Growth
Alphabet (GOOGL) closed 1.34% higher at $324.89 on October 28, before plunging nearly 10% to approximately $292.50 in after-hours trading following its third-quarter earnings release. Revenue increased 25% year over year to $127.58 billion, up from $119.80 billion in the previous quarter, but fell short of Wall Street's roughly $128.2 billion forecast. Adjusted EPS of approximately $2.67 also missed the $3.02 consensus estimate by nearly 12%. Although quarterly operating profit remained resilient, the earnings shortfall and deteriorating free cash flow intensified concerns over Alphabet's massive AI investment program, triggering a sharp reassessment of the stock's near-term outlook.
Cloud Revenue Doubles, but Search Growth and Cash Flow Raise Concerns
Google Cloud remained the standout performer, generating $30.71 billion in revenue, up 103% year over year and 24% sequentially. Cloud operating income reached $11.12 billion, compared with $8.81 billion in the previous quarter and $3.59 billion a year earlier. Strong enterprise AI demand, expanding cloud infrastructure adoption, and growing TPU system sales supported the acceleration. However, the contribution from hardware sales also raises questions about the sustainability of Cloud's extraordinary growth rate.
Meanwhile, Google Search and related revenue rose 12% to $63.35 billion, slowing from 17% growth in the second quarter. YouTube advertising growth also moderated to 9%. Although AI-driven search engagement continues to expand, monetization through AI Mode remains in its early stages, leaving uncertainty over future advertising revenue growth.
The greater pressure comes from capital expenditures. Quarterly spending reached $51.36 billion, up from $44.92 billion in the previous quarter, while free cash flow deteriorated from negative $5.86 billion to negative $9.07 billion. Management maintained its 2026 capital expenditure guidance of $195 billion to $205 billion and expects another significant increase in 2027.
The earnings picture also deserves clarification. An $8.66 billion equity investment loss reduced reported EPS by approximately $0.55, while operating income still increased 30% to $40.58 billion. Nevertheless, the adjusted earnings miss indicates that investor concerns extend beyond accounting volatility.
At the after-hours price of $292.50, Alphabet trades at approximately 19 times the pre-earnings consensus adjusted EPS estimate of $15.34 for 2027. The valuation has become more attractive following the selloff, although potential downward earnings revisions remain a concern. Wall Street's pre-earnings average price target of approximately $430 may also face adjustments as analysts incorporate the latest financial results.
Earnings Gap Weakens the Technical Structure, with $300 Emerging as a Key Level
GOOGL had already shown signs of technical weakness before the earnings release. The October 28 closing price of $324.89 stood below both its 50-day and 200-day simple moving averages, near $341. The daily RSI was around 39, reflecting weakening momentum, while the MACD remained in negative territory.
The stock's regular-session volume reached approximately 63 million shares, well above its recent average of roughly 25 million, indicating heightened trading activity ahead of earnings. The subsequent after-hours selloff pushed the stock sharply below its recent consolidation range.
The $290–295 area, where shares traded following the announcement, represents the first potential stabilization zone. However, support at this level still requires confirmation during regular trading. The $300 psychological threshold becomes the initial recovery test, while $316–326 forms a broader resistance region based on the previous consolidation area and pre-earnings closing price. Further upside would encounter substantial resistance near $341, where the major moving averages converge.
Recovery or Further Downside? Three Trading Scenarios to Watch
Three potential scenarios could determine GOOGL's next move. If buyers establish support around $290–295 and the stock reclaims $300 with improving volume, a technical rebound toward $316–326 becomes possible. A successful retest of $300 would provide stronger confirmation of stabilization.
If repeated rebound attempts fail below $300, the stock could remain under pressure as investors reassess earnings expectations and AI spending commitments. A decisive break below $290, accompanied by expanding selling volume, would weaken the initial support thesis and increase the probability of further downside.
Google Cloud's exceptional growth continues to support Alphabet's long-term earnings potential. However, near-term trading opportunities will depend on whether buying demand can stabilize the stock, whether the earnings gap begins to narrow, and whether expectations for future free cash flow start to recover.

Deutsche Bank believes that SpaceX's political risks are overestimated by the market—its core contracts are signed by federal executive agencies, congressional intervention is extremely limited, and there are no substitute suppliers in most business areas. The most immediate risk comes from the Texas governor-elect's tough stance on data centers, but tightening compute power supply might actually enhance SpaceX's pricing power and revenues.

As the Nasdaq falls into a correction zone, Cathie Wood ("Sister Wood") stated that the prevailing market anxiety actually makes her more confident in the continuation of the bull market. She attributes this correction to pressures in the bond market and controversies over AI capital expenditures, but emphasizes that the technological revolution is still ongoing.
