Dogecoin cofounder Billy Markus recently drew attention to the prevalence of Shiba Inu dogs in Japan, sharing his impressions in a post on X. Markus, known online as Shibetoshi Nakamoto, commented on the breed’s widespread presence, writing, “Like, 50% of the dogs I see in Japan are Shiba Inu.”

Shiba Inu: A Symbol of Japanese Canine Culture

Markus made his remarks based on personal experience during his time in Japan, where the Shiba Inu has maintained a strong cultural significance. The breed is one of Japan’s most recognizable and beloved native dogs, often featured in local folklore and traditions.

His reflection is particularly notable given his role in the Dogecoin project, a cryptocurrency which drew direct inspiration from the Shiba Inu dog. Dogecoin’s initial branding utilized imagery connected to the breed, embedding it in the global digital asset landscape.

The Origins of Dogecoin and the Doge Meme

Dogecoin launched on December 6, 2013, developed by software engineers Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer. The founders designed Dogecoin as a playful alternative to Bitcoin, drawing from the viral “Doge” meme: a quirky image of a Shiba Inu dog accompanied by colorful, comic-style text displaying humorous internal monologues. That meme originated from a 2010 photo of a female Shiba Inu named Kabosu.

Kabosu was adopted by Atsuko Satō, a kindergarten teacher living in Sakura, east of Tokyo. Satō rescued Kabosu in 2008 from a puppy mill, documenting her new pet’s daily life in blog posts. In 2010, Satō shared a photo of Kabosu crossing her paws while lounging, an image that soon caught the attention of online communities and rapidly became the basis for the famous Doge meme.

Mini dictionary: Shiba Inu – A small, agile dog breed native to Japan, known for its expression, curly tail, and fox-like appearance. Shiba Inus have become globally recognizable due to their frequent use in memes and their connection to Dogecoin.

Dogecoin’s Legacy and Kabosu’s Impact

The Doge meme, featuring Kabosu’s distinctive expression and written thoughts in comically broken English, gained viral status across online forums like Reddit. Its popularity grew far beyond internet humor, eventually serving as the branding inspiration behind Dogecoin. The coin’s dog-themed image set a precedent for other digital assets, including the later launch of Shiba Inu (SHIB) token.

Since its creation, Dogecoin has risen to become a major cryptocurrency, ranked as the 12th largest by market capitalization with $11.17 billion, according to CoinMarketCap. This reflects not only the enduring appeal of the Shiba Inu meme, but also the strong community formed around Dogecoin’s lighthearted origins.

Kabosu passed away in May 2024 at the age of 18, following 14 years as one of the internet’s most recognized pets and the face of the Doge meme.
